The Museum CollectionJane Scott Mackenzie Portrait
Locket
The locket Mrs. Mackenzie is wearing bears the initials "JG" for Joseph Gallego, a friend of Mackenzie's who left $8,000 in his will to her and an additional $2,000 for the care of Rosalie Poe. A portrait of Gallego's wife, Mary Gallego, hung in the Mackenzie home Duncan Lodge. The Mackenzies named one of their daughters Mary Gallego Mackenzie (1811-1844) and one of their sons Joseph Gallego Mackenzie (1816-1821).
Description: Jane Scott Mackenzie (1783-1865) was the foster mother of Edgar Allan Poe's only sister, Rosalie Mackenzie Poe (1810-1874). Rosalie Poe lived with Mrs. Mackenzie until the latter's death in 1865. Poe was a frequent visitor at the Mackenzie home "Duncan Lodge" during his visits to Richmond in 1848 and 1849. He was also a close friend of Mrs. Mackenzie's son (and Rosalie's foster brother) John Hamilton Mackenzie. This painting is attributed to Edgar Poe's friend Robert Matthew Sully. Poe Museum co-founder Mrs. Archer Jones purchased this and two other paintings (Sally Scott Gray and Mary Gallego) that once hung in the Mackenzie home "Duncan Lodge" from Mrs. Mackenzie's granddaughter Jane Mackenzie Miller. Jones donated the paintings to the Poe Museum in 1927. Search CollectionCategories
