Dedication

Both the American and English editions are dedicated to Elizabeth Barrett Barrett (later Mrs. Browning). Barrett wrote Poe afterwards, "Receiving a book from you seems to authorize or at least encourage me to try to express what I have felt long before--my sense of the high honor you have done me in your country and of mine, of the dedication of your poems. It is too great a distinction, conferred by a hand of too liberal generosity. I wish for my own sake I were worthy of it."

Description:

Published in London in 1846 (the year after the collection was first published by the same publishers in New York), this book uses the same sheets as the American edition with the addition of a new title page. It is bound in green cloth.

Poe's poem "The Raven" was popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the British poem to whom the volume is dedicated, wrote Poe in April 1846 that the poem had "produced a sensation, a 'fit horror'" in England.
