Description:

The Providence, Rhode Island poet Sarah Helen Whitman (1803-1878) was briefly engaged to Edgar Allan Poe in 1848. His 1848 poem "To Helen" is dedicated to her. After his death, Whitman defended Poe's reputation by assisting Poe biographer John Henry Ingram and by writing the book Edgar Poe and His Critics (1860).

This engraving depicts an idealized Whitman as a Classical bust.
