This watercolor was executed in 1959 and reflects that influence of painterly abstraction, which was popularized in the 1940s by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and others. The painting is titled on the bottom center "E.A. Poe" and signed and dated on the bottom right "W. Lewis 1959." According to a label affixed to the back of the frame, the painting was shown in the Forsythe Gallery.
