Anne Elizabeth Shelton was the daughter of Edgar Allan Poe's last fiancee Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton (1810-1888). Had Poe married Mrs. Shelton, Ann Elizabeth Shelton would have been his stepdaughter, but Poe died shortly before the wedding was to have taken place. Anne Elizabeth Shelton would later marry John Leftwich. This photograph was one of a number of Shelton family items given to the Poe Museum in 1979 by Elmira Shelton's descendants Thomas T. Cobb and William M. Cobb.
