Description:

The October 1842 issue of the Literary Gazette and Quarterly Advertizer contains notices of the anthologies The Gift and The Poets and Poetry of America. Poe contributions appear in both of these anthologies.

The Gift contains the first printing of "The Pit and the Pendulum," and The Poets and Poetry of America contains a biographical sketch of Poe in addition to reprints of "The Coliseum," "The Haunted Palace," and "The Sleeper." The editor of The Poets and Poetry of America was Rufus W. Griswold, the anthologist who would later edit the first posthumous collection of Poe's complete works in addition to writing a scathing memoir of Poe in an attempt to damage the latter's reputation.

The Poe Museum also owns copies of The Gift and The Poets and Poetry of America.
