Description:
James Royster was the father of Poe's first fiancee, Elmira Royster (1810-1888). Mr. Royster disapproved of the relationship and broke the engagement by intercepting their letters. Miss Royster eventually married the wealthy businessman Alexander Shelton (1807-1844) instead. This miniature was given to the Poe Museum by Elmira Royster Shelton's descendants.
