Review of Uncle Tom's Cabin

Listed in the table of contents on the front cover of this issue is a review of the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The listing described the book as the "depraved application of fiction to false teachings." This popular novel supported the cause of the abolition of slavery but was not well received in Richmond, where the Southern Literary Messenger was published and a center of the domestic slave trade.

This copy of the December 1852 issue of the Southern Literary Messenger bears the autograph of New York writer Anna Charlotte Lynch. The Southern Literary Messenger was the Richmond magazine at which Poe began his career in journalism in 1835. The final installments of Poe's series, Marginalia, were published in the magazine in 1849, the year of the author's death.

Anna Charlotte Lynch (1815-1891), whose signature appears on the cover of this issue, hosted a literary salon Poe attended regularly while he was living in New York City.
