Print of the Exchange Hotel
Poe gave his final public reading in the Exchange Hotel. For a time this was Richmond, Virginia's more luxurious hotel. The building was demolished around 1900.
Description: This silver-plated picher was used in the Exchange Hotel, the location of Poe's last public reading. A popular speaker, Poe delivered lectures and recited poetry in a number of cities during the last decade of his life. His final such lecture was given at 8 P.M. on September 24, 1849, just weeks before his death. The Daily Republican reported of the reading, "there was...a large, attentive and appreciative audience present, whom Mr. Poe entertained during the evening by the recitation of several poetic morceaux," and the Daily Times added "We have seldom heard a voice of such melodious modulations as Mr. Poe's."
