Edgar Allan Poe Young Writers' Conference 2013 |
Richmond VA Poe Museum |
The Edgar Allan Poe Young Writers' Conference, scheduled for June 16-22, 2013, provides a weeklong residential program designed to encourage and stimulate the writing skills of high school students. Students will have a variety of experiences including small group instruction with a writing instructor, lectures by practicing writers in several different fields, personal writing time with critical response from instructors, and special events designed to enhance the writing experience.
This conference is sponsored by the Edgar Allan Poe Museum of Richmond, Virginia, to continue the legacy of Edgar Allan Poe. One of Poe's greatest concerns was the development of a truly American literature. As editor of many of the nation's leading journals, Poe inspired many young writers. In keeping with that concern, the Poe Museum hopes to encourage the development of the next generation of writers.

Exhibit: Poe in Paris |
1914 East Main Street Richmond VA Poe Museum Exhibit Building |
Even during his lifetime, Poe was a celebrity in France--a country he would never visit. Soon after his death in 1849, his works were translated by leading French writers like Charles Baudelaire and Stephan Mallarme, and his works were illustrated by the most important French artists from Dore to Manet. It is largely due to the French people's promotion of Poe's works at a time when the author and his works had been dismissed by American scholars, that Poe's works are help in such high esteem today. The Poe Museum's new exhibit "Poe in Paris" will explore Poe's presence in mid-nineteenth century Paris. Visitors will see rare editions of Baudelaire's translations of Poe's works as well as portraits of Poe by Manet. The exhibit is included with the price of general admission.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Poe's reputation as a tortured, tragic figure, melancholic poet and the "master of the macabre" has fueled his popularity for over a century and a half, while debunking stereotypes and myths associated with that reputation has always been an essential part of Poe criticism. Going beyond the debunking of the popular caricature, we would like to discover the "positive" side of Poe's life and work. Just as his life had its ups and downs, his writing, too, reflects a wide range of experience, not exclusively the dark and dismal. We therefore invite papers on a broad diversity of subjects with a focus on the life-affirming and vital elements in Poe's work. Papers may cover (but are not limited by) such themes as:
Poe and ethics (his ideas of love, friendship, manners)
Poe and art (aesthetic ideas in literature and criticism)
Science, philosophy, Eureka
Social and family life
Literary circles, friends and followers
Success stories of Poe's poems and tales at home and abroad.
Deadline for submission of proposals is October 31, 2012.
Please submit proposals to Alexandra Urakova at positivelypoe@gmail.com.
