Special Lecture: "The Raven & Christian Thought" by Lecturer Joshua Lewis

October 8th, 2017 | 2 pm

The meaning of a text is never fixed in time, but meaning develops and emerges as a reader comes into contact with it and interprets it within their own worldview. What would happen then, if Poe's famous poem, "The Raven,"was interpreted in light of biblical and theological presuppositions? In this presentation, Joshua S. Lewis, will apply a filter to "The Raven" that will allow us to see how Poe wrestles with the same ideas and questions that theologians and the Bible havestruggled with for centuries. For example, what is the relation that humankind can have with nature? What of the afterlife? Are there spiritual beings that exist beyond the material world? What about human suffering?

Join us in the Garden for an intriguing presentation and dialogue that will provide creative new ways in which to read Poe's works.
