September Unhappy Hour: “The Black Cat”
September 24, 2009 6-9 P.M. with movie starting at 9 P.M.
Start off the Halloween season early at the Poe Museum. To get everyone into the mood for Poe’s favorite season, we will be showing a film in the garden after dark. The Unhappy Hour is free, but a $5 donation will be requested of those who stay to see the film.

Poe Memorial Service
October 3, 2009 1-5 P.M.
The Poe Museum will mark the 160th anniversary of Poe’s death with a memorial service and a day full of activities. This year, instead of recreating Poe’s funeral, we will take our guests back in time to Poe’s final days (based on Poe’s attending physician’s own accounts). Be there to hear the last words of the great poet. The event is free with museum admission.

Macabre March
October 3, 2009 7-10 P.M.
Stick around after the Poe Museum Service for a candlelit walking tour of Poe’s Richmond beginning at his mother’s final resting place, St. John’s Church, and ending at the Poe Museum. The tour will take you through the darkened streets that Poe once walked, and you will encounter the places and faces that inspired him. Admission is $15.

Poe’s Pumpkin Patch
October 25, 2009 2-5 P.M.
Do your kids think museums and literature are boring? Bring them to the Poe Museum for an afternoon of weird, Poe-themed activities like “Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Black Cat” or the “Tell-Tale Heart Scavenger Hunt.” Admission is included with regular museum admission.

October Unhappy Hour: “The Spirits of the Dead”
October 29, 2009 6-9 P.M.
Nobody does Halloween like Poe, so come dressed to depress in the final Unhappy Hour of the season. There will be live music, a Victorian séance, and a cash bar. Don’t forget to bring your mustaches and wigs for the Poe Look-Alike Contest.

"Poe: Face to Face" Exhibit Opening
January 19- June 14, 2009
Admission included with Poe Museum regular admission
Exhibit opening during Poe's birthday bash on January 19, 2009.

See Poe as you've never seen him before in the rare nineteenth century daguerreotypes and engravings from his time. These are the images through which the public would have first encountered Poe, long before they were reproduced around the world. Included is the famous "Ultima Thule" daguerreotype, taken four days after Poe had attempted suicide. A highlight of the show is the "Players' Club" daguerreotype taken weeks before his death. This photograph once belonged to the Players' Club in New York City before disappearing--only to turn up on the program Antiques Roadshow.
