Davidson Portrait of Edgar Allan Poe
Description:This albumen print is an altered version of the "Traylor" daguerreotype taken by William Abbott Pratt in Richmond in 1849. The alterations include the inclusion of a quill pen in Poe's hand and the addition of a curtain in the background. Poe is facing the oppposite direction of that seen in the original "Traylor" daguerreotype because this copy was made from a reverse copy of the original daguerreotype. The copy daguerreotype belonged to Thomas Davidson, so this image is referred to as the "Davidson" portrait of Poe.
The image was produced in 1876 to serve as the frontispiece for the 1877 book Edgar Allan Poe: A Memorial Volume by Sara Sigourney Rice. The image is also referred to as the "Memorial" Portrait.
